Dark circles under the eyes are a common condition for both men and women. We’ve all been there, you look in the mirror, and it’s like you are seeing a completely different person.

But why do they appear? That’s the million dollar question. And the answer is a variety of reasons, ranging from genetics or more simply, age. It can also be hereditary, or swollen blood vessels under the eye that are not draining properly. Dark circles can be made worse by over consuming sodium, or because the presence of allergens around the eyes.

Dark circles can also appear after a long exposure to the sun, frequent dehydration, oversleeping or lack of sleep, working too many hours in front of a computer or watching TV for hours. You can also try to prevent dark circles from ever forming, by drinking less alcohol, not rubbing your eyes, reduce or quit smoking and maybe change your sleeping position.

Bags under the eyes are actually fat pads surrounding the eye. These fat pads can swell causing the skin to bulge, and give the appearance of “bags.” And you can have dark circles and bags under your eyes at the same time.

There are a number of methods — both natural and medically prescribed — that people use to get rid of dark circles under their eyes, or to simply lessen the appearance of them. Although not all of these treatments are permanent, they will help to reduce the appearance of dark circles with maintenance and consistency.

Everybody that has them, wishes to get rid of them. And even though having dark circles isn’t a health concern, you might want to get rid of them for cosmetic reasons. And we have 3 natural ways to do just that.

Fresh Cucumber Slices

You have probably seen this in so many movies, where women put slices on their eyes. Well, cucumber slices have been used to reduce puffiness around the eyes, but also refresh the appearance of skin around the eyes. The treatment is very simple, cut a fresh and cold cucumber into thin slices, and place the slices over each eye, over the darkened area and leave them for 10-15 minutes. Once you are done, rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Apply Cold Tea Bags

Another simple method to get rid of the dark circles under your eyes is by using cold tea bags. Antioxidants and caffeine are very potent when fighting against dark circles, and tea contains both. Also, the tannin in tea bags reduces swelling and discoloration. Put chamomile or green tea bags in water and place them in the refrigerator. Once they are cold, place them over your eyes, and keep your eyes closed. Keep them for 10 minutes, then rinse with water. Do this for several weeks and you’ll see a considerable difference.

Almond Essential Oil

Almond essential oil is one of the best treatments you can use for you dark circles. The natural vitamin E from this essential oil can help neutralize the dark circles under your eyes and make your skin looks brighter. This routine is easy to do. Apply some almond oil on your dark circles and massage gently. Leave the oil overnight and rinse with cold water the following morning.

Additional Tips

Reduce your alcohol intake, up your water intake!

Alcohol can widen the blood vessels, and cause dark circles to look more prominent. This is an easy fix, cut down on alcohol, and up your water intake. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day.

Get a good night sleep!

Extreme fatigue and a deprivation of sleep can cause dark circles under your eyes. It can also make your skin look paler, making your dark circles appear darker. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, somewhere from seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

There are some medical treatments available that can help you to reduce the appearance of dark circles. Some of the more common are:

  • chemical peels
  • laser surgery to enhance skin tightening
  • injecting pigment into thinning skin areas
